As a mother, when you book your maternity, newborn, or family photo session with Paige Forden Photography, you’re investing in so much more than beautiful, timeless photographs. My goal is to create a luxurious experience that is especially curated towards mothers. Motherhood is a role that deserves to be celebrated, so every step of your photography process will be seamless and customized to you, including your wardrobe selection.
Choosing the right outfit for a session can be challenging. All Mothers who schedule a portrait session with me have exclusive access to a luxury boutique, hand-picked client wardrobe. Every piece has been carefully selected to flatter mom. There is a variety of sizes and options to choose from, and most pieces can be fitted to mom during the photo session.
As a Motherhood photographer, I’ve learned that clothing plays an important role in the overall look of your images. There are certain styles and silhouettes that look the best on film, and I want to make sure that mom is completely in love with all of her photos.
Here is my guide on what to wear for your maternity or motherhood portrait session:
Most of the pieces in my client wardrobe are long, flowing dresses, as they tend to be the most flattering for all body types. As far as necklines go, I’ve found that a V-neck, scoop or off-the-shoulder neckline works well for many clients. A longer sleeve, whether it be long, flowing, ruffled is preferred, as it flatters the upper arm area. Adding a knit shawl or cardigan to drape over shoulders also creates texture and beautiful layers.
Almost every piece in the wardrobe highlights the waist in some way. No matter what Mom’s body type is, a dress that compliments her waist and flows down the body is an excellent choice, and always photographs beautifully.
Color palate is another crucial aspect to consider when choosing your portrait session outfit. I’ve found that soft, muted, or neutral colors like, cream, gray, blush, sand, lavender, and navy photograph best. It’s important to stay away from dark colors and bold or busy prints. Choosing a dress with a print is perfectly fine, but I recommend the print be minimal and soft. Texture, like lace, linen, or knits is always welcome.
If you’re preparing for a family session and one of your family members is wearing a dark color, for example, dark jeans, it looks best when at least one other person is wearing a similar shade. Otherwise, all of the focus in the photo will be on whoever is wearing the dark color.
At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is for Mom to feel beautiful, celebrated, and comfortable during her photo session. Although the wardrobe is included with every maternity, newborn, or family portrait session, it’s absolutely not required. These are simply my recommendations, and what I’ve found to make moms the happiest with their photos.
